All-day schools. Time for more.

The capital investment program "Zukunft Bildung und Betreuung" (future education and care) is a federal measure to support the Länder in building up and expanding all-day schooling in Germany. The program is one step in an educational reform supported by federal and state governments. To date, more than 8.200 schools profit from the capital investment program.
Education needs time. If children spend the whole day in school, teachers have more time for challenging and supporting them, thus improving the quality of education. All-day school provides scope for creative work and for individual support of pupils. Schooling is naturally understood in other countries as all-day schooling. Compared to other countries, the school system in Germany consists almost exclusively of half-day schools.

On 12th of may 2003, federal and state governments signed an administrative agreement for the capital spending program "Zukunft Bildung und Betreuung". The federal government allocated 4 billion Euros until 2009 for setting up new and expanding existing all-day schools in the German Länder. The goal is to offer all-day schooling all over Germany according to the large demand of parents and pupils.

The capital spending program "Zukunft Bildung und Betreuung" has grown into a successful program for both federal and state levels. The states finance the additional personnel, the federal government finances the capital investment for an attractive all-day school.

The program "Ideas for more! Learning all the day" addresses teachers and pupils and aims to encourage them to advocate conversion of their own school into an all-day school. Half a day is too short for explaining the world.
