    Security research programme

    Security risks have changed: even minor interference with the vital supply networks in our society can lead to breakdown despite the robust technologies used. Small terrorist or criminal groups can achieve great impact and cause considerable damage. Global mobility facilitates the spreading of hazards. Natural disasters and technical accidents can cause great secondary damage in a closely networked world. To counter these threats, the German government has published its first security research programme.

    Research Programme "IKT 2020"

    Information and communications technology (ICT) are the motor of innovation. Over 80 per cent of innovations in the application ares typical for Germany's economic strength - automotive, medical technology and logistics are ICT driven. ICT is amongst the most important areas of innovation in the Federal Government's Hightech Strategy.

    Genetic Engineering Law

    Germany's genetic engineering law will be amended with the aim of advancing research and the application of genetic engineering, and of ensuring a high level of safety, the co-existence of production methods and the consumer's freedom of choice. As a first step, the Federal Cabinet adopted a paper on 28th of February 2007 with six key points: promote research, develop pragmatic procedures, define good practice, secure transparency, specify liability regulation and ensure environmental protection.

    Private Equity Law

    On 15th August 2007 the Cabinet has agreed upon a draft of a bill on the modernization of the conditions for capital investments (Gesetz zur Modernisierung der Rahmenbedingungen für Kapitalbeteiligungen, MoRaKG). With the bill a new venture capital law will be framed that advances capital investments into young enterprises and small businesses.

    E-Government

    Starting from the Action Plan E-Government and the European Initiative i2010, the experiences with BundOnline 2005 and DeutschlandOnline, the Federal Government on September 13th 2006 concluded the E-Government 2.0 Programme. The programme is part of the government programme Future-Oriented Administration through Innovation. On 17th of July, 2007, the Federal Ministry of the Interior invited scientists to discuss technological solutions for improved service and efficiency of the public sector.

    Action Programme "Informationsgesellschaft Deutschland 2010"

    The German government is bundling its activities in the Information Society Germany 2010 (iD2010) action programme. The programme iD2010 adresses central topics of the development of information society and information and communications technology (ICT), reaching from improving the economical and technical framework until consulting and research support measures in education and research. The political formation of information society has grown in urgency, since ICT has become the dominant factor for improved productivity, growth and employment.

    Nanoinitiative 2010

    The German government has bundled its nanotechnology-related activities in the "Nanoinitiative 2010". It forms a government-wide framework of aims and measures. The prime focus is on future areas, improved basic conditions, responsible use of technology and a broad dialogue with the public. About 600 companies are currently dealing with the research, application development and distribution of nanotechnology products in Germany. The market potential for nanotechnology products is expected to be over one billion Euros worldwide in 2015.
